How To Spot A Roofing Scam

Your roof is the most important piece of your home’s exterior. It provides a number of benefits, including keeping your home protected from the elements and pests, boosting your home’s curb appeal and resale value, and providing your home with additional layers of insulation. With so much to gain from having a properly maintained roof, homeowners and contractors alike know how important it is to keep your roof protected. Some contractors will try to take advantage of this fact by praying on homeowners who are not well versed in exterior remodeling, and convince them that their home is in need of repairs when it is not. If you’re interested in learning more about roofing scams and how to avoid them, keep reading below:

Storm Chasers

When it comes to roofing scams, there is one that we see far more than any other: storm chasers. This scam is built around leveraging homeowners fear after a significant storm comes through the area. With the storm chaser scam, a contractor will come knocking on your door after a major storm telling you that your roof was damaged and it needs to be repaired. Most contractors won’t come knocking on your door offering their services, particularly after a major storm when they are being bombarded with calls for work. A storm chaser will convince you to allow them to complete the work, and then as soon as the work is completed they leave town, and you have a poorly installed roof that will fail within a few years with no way to contact the contractor.

Door-To-Door Salesman

This scam is similar to the storm chaser, praying on homeowners fears, but slightly different. The door-to-door salesman will show up at your front step telling you that your roof looks like it needs to be repaired, and ask to get up on your roof in order to assess the damage. Oftentimes once they are up on your roof they will cause damage that needs to be repaired when your roof was in fine condition. While it is not unheard of for contractors to make door-to-door pitches, it is usually a warning sign. If a contractor knocks at your door asking to get on your roof, ask to see their licensing and insurance and to schedule an appointment for another day. If they are serious about the work they will be willing to provide this information and reschedule.

Low Cost Of Installation

Another common roofing scam that homeowners see the low-ball offer. This contractor will give you a quote that is far lower than any of the competitors, but that number will continue to rise as the project is being completed due to “unforeseen” costs. If you find that your contractor is giving you a number that appears too good to be true, it very likely is!

Kitchen Remodeling

How To Maximize Your Kitchen’s Space For Functionality

For some homeowners, making sure that you maximize the space you have can help make your kitchen space more functional and accessible. However, some homeowners don’t know where to begin when it comes to deciding where to start on their kitchen remodel. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can maximize your kitchen’s space, take a look at our blog to learn more about how to improve your home’s functionality by maximizing the space you have available!

Use Drawers Rather Than Doors On Your Cabinets & Cupboards

One of the easiest ways to increase your kitchen’s functionality when space is tight is to use drawers rather than doors. When using doors on your cabinets, you’ll still need to deal with digging through the back edges of your cabinets in order to reach everything in your doors. When you use drawers instead of cabinets, it makes it far easier to reach all of the things you have stowed away and it doesn’t mess up your organization.

Choose The Right Hardware For Your Cabinets

Another thing you can do to help make your small kitchen feel less cramped is to install cabinets without traditional handles. Look for cabinets that have handles set into the sides. If you don’t have large handles on your cabinets, you won’t get your clothes caught on anything trying to turn around.

Build A Breakfast Nook Rather Than Using A Kitchen Table

One of the easiest ways to use space in your kitchen is to add a kitchen table trying to create a dining area. However, if you don’t have a large space to work with, adding a kitchen table can make your small kitchen nearly impossible to navigate. If you’re looking for an easy way to add seating to your kitchen, consider building a breakfast nook with a couple of stools and a counter space. This will provide you with a place to enjoy your meals without making your kitchen any more crowded.

Take Advantage Of Hanging Storage

Another way you can make the most of the space you have available to you in your kitchen is by using hanging storage wherever you can. There are a number of places you can install hanging storage in your kitchen, including above your appliances, or possibly inside your cabinets by adding clips to the walls of your cabinets. It can be very easy to free up cabinet space by hanging your pots and pans over the stove, allowing you to use your cabinet space for your food.

New Wooden Front Door

Signs Your Front Door Needs To Replaced

Your front door is the entrance to your home. It helps to protect your home from the elements and intruders, as well as providing curb appeal and boosting your home’s resale value. With so much to gain from having a properly installed, well-maintained front door, it is important to ensure that your door is in good repair! If you’ve been wondering how you can tell if your front door needs to be replaced, keep reading to learn more!

Your Door Is Drafty

As your front door ages, your threshold can deteriorate, as can your door itself.  An old door can begin to leak air, as the seal around your door cracks with age and exposure to the elements. If you notice that your home is surprisingly cold, particularly around the entrances of your home, check around your door for drafts.

Your Door Is Rusted Or Damaged

Another sign that your door needs to be replaced is when you find that your door is beginning to rust or has dings and nicks, consider that as a sign that you should consider replacing it. While a few dings won’t affect your doors structural integrity, it does detract from your curb appeal. As for rust, if your metal door is beginning to rust, that can seriously compromise the strength of your door. If you see that your door is rusting or damaged, be sure to replace it!

Your Door Is Scraping The Floor Or Threshold

If you find that your door is scraping your floors or the threshold of the door, you likely need to replace the door. A door that is starting to scrape your floor indicates that your door has warped or sagged due to the elements. Rather than letting your door continue to damage your floors, replace your door to mitigate damage to keep your home protected.

You’re Finding Pests In Your Home

Pests, such as ants and other bugs, can find their way into your home by simply walking in through your front door. If your door doesn’t close properly, or there is a large gap in between your door and your threshold, you could be allowing in pests, as well as reducing your home’s energy efficiency. Finding pests near your entryways is a clear sign that your door isn’t doing its job.

Your Hinges Are Squeaking

Finally, if you find that your door’s hinges are getting louder by the day, it is a sign that you should consider replacing your door. While it’s possible that your door’s hinges may just need a bit of maintenance, squeaky hinges are often a sign that your door is not far behind! If you find that your hinges are squeaking, take a look at your door to examine whether you need your door replaced!
