Three Sons Double-Hung Window

Different Styles of Windows

When it comes to replacement windows, there isn’t a one size fits all solution.  Different homeowners have different needs, whether its functionality, aesthetics, or cost. Luckily, there are an enormous variety of window styles to choose from, ensuring that every homeowner can find windows that fit their needs! Keep reading below to learn about a few of the most popular window styles and when and where you should install them!

Double-Hung

Perhaps the most common window style installed by homeowners, double-hung windows operate vertically in their tracks, making them easy to use.  Modern double-hung windows also allow homeowners to tilt the windows outward in order to reach the outer glass of their second story windows without using a ladder, which makes cleaning far easier. This also promotes superior ventilation, and they are a very popular window style for these reasons.

Casement

Another popular style for its ease of use, casement windows operate via a crank that opens them horizontally outwards.  While they are not as easy to clean as a double-hung window, if you are going to have children frequently operating the windows in a particular room, casement windows are a safe, and easy to use option!

Picture

While this option is best suited to rooms that don’t need additional means of ventilation, picture windows are a wonderful way to flood your room with natural light! Large and stationary, picture windows don’t offer the same degree of functionality as some other styles, but they are certainly a statement piece, and they look fantastic when straddled by casement or double hung windows on either side to provide ventilation.

Awning

Like casement windows, awning windows are easily operated via a crank, making them a great option for the kids.  The only difference between a casement and awning window is that while a casement window opens “outwards”, an awning window opens “upwards”.

Sliding

If ease of operation is your primary concern, sliding windows are the option for you.  They are most useful when installed in hard to reach places, such as over the kitchen sink where you might need a bit of fresh air while you’re standing over a sink full of dishes.

Bay/Bow Windows

Finally, we’ve arrived at two of the most beautiful window styles on the market, bay and bow windows. The two styles are nearly identical, with a bay window generally comprised of three windows, while a bow has four or five.  However, both share the same general design, which entails a curved structure that extends outward from the side of the home, with a stationary window in the center of the piece, surrounded by smaller double-hung windows that add a degree of functionality.  Bay and Bow windows are statement pieces that will function as the centerpiece of nearly any room they are installed in.  They are fantastic as a reading nook, sunbathing spot, or even just for the beauty they provide.

Signs Your Windows Need To Be Replaced

Your windows are an important piece when it comes to the health of your home. They provide your home with sunlight, ventilation, and curb appeal, and play an important role when it comes to keeping your home in good condition. However, it can often be difficult to identify whether your windows are in need of replacement.

Drafts Around The Frames

A clear sign that your windows need to be replaced is when you begin to feel drafts around your windows.  If you feel the cold creeping in around your windows during the winter, or the heat during the summer, take you’ll want to replace your home’s windows.

Difficulty Operating The Windows

If you are having trouble operating your windows, you’ll want to consider replacing them. When your windows begin to stick in their frames, it’s time to consider replacing them.  Your windows should be easy to operate in order to avoid injury, and after years of being exposed to the elements, your windows may begin to stick in their tracks.

It’s Hard To Clean Your Windows

While old windows are often difficult to clean.  Old double-hung windows have to be cleaned from the outside on a ladder, which makes it a difficult, slightly dangerous task to have to do on an annual or bi-annual basis. If you’re tired of having to climb up on a ladder every time you need to clean your windows, consider installing new double-hung windows.  Modern double-hung windows are generally designed to swing inward to make cleaning second or third story windows much easier.

Noise Pollution

If you feel like you can hear every car’s engine within a half-mile radius through your closed windows, you’re probably not imagining it! Old windows, particularly ones that are drafty, tend to also leak sound through the small openings that drafts come through.  If you feel like you can hear the whole neighborhood at night, your windows may be to blame.

They Look Worn Out

This sign is particularly relevant if you plan on putting your home on the market in the near future.  Old, chipped windows often take away from a home’s curb appeal, and can significantly take away from their

Signs That Your Roof Needs To Be Replaced

Roofs, just like any other portion of your home’s exterior, eventually need to be replaced.  They are constantly exposed to, and pummeled by, the elements, functioning as your home’s largest barrier against them. This leads to wear and tear that will eventually degrade your roof’s ability to safely protect your home. However, sometimes it can be hard to tell when your roof is nearing the end of it’s lifespan.  If you’ve been curious about whether or not your roof needs to be replaced, take a look at our blog to learn about a few of the most common signs.

Your Shingles Are In Bad Shape

There are plenty of reasons your shingles may need to be replaced.  They could be losing granules, which help protect the shingles asphalt coating from UV rays, provide fire resistance, and also add aesthetic appeal. Your shingles could also be curling, cupping, or buckling from water or wind damage, which obviously degrades their performance.

Your Roof Is Visibly Sagging In

A clear sign that you need to replace your roof is the moment you see any visible sagging.  If you see that your home has a sagging roof, you’ll want to replace it immediately to protect your family and your home.  A sagging roof indicates that there is a significant amount of rot damage that’s affecting your home’s ability to hold up the weight of your roof, which could cause it to collapse and cause a great deal of damage.  If you notice that your roof is sagging at all, have it examined and replaced immediately!

There Is Water or Visible Light In Your Attic

If you have any water, or visible light, coming into your attic, you will need to replace your roof.  Light is a relatively minor concern when compared to water. If there is light finding its way into your attic, it means there are small holes that could also allow in moisture and contribute to energy loss.  However, if you find water in your attic, that can quickly become a major issue.  It will effect your home’s frame, leading to rot damage and causing significant damage to your home’s roof deck and potentially the frame of your home.

Moss Growth

Another sign that your roof may need to be replaced is moss growth.  Whether your roof needs to be replaced really depends on how significant the mass has become.  Moss tends to grow in climates with more precipitation, and particularly on roofs that don’t get a lot of light which helps to evaporate moisture.  If moss growth becomes significant, it can find its way into the nooks and crannies of your shingles where it can cause significant damage, as it traps moisture on your roof which becomes particularly damaging during the winter.

It’s Old

Finally, you may simply need to replace your roof because it’s outdated. If your roof has been on your home for more than two or three decades, it’s likely that it’s not doing a great job at protecting your home from moisture damage, or keeping your home very energy efficient.
