Belmont, MA Before & After

Belmont, MA Roof, Siding, Window & Door Replacement

Our team at Three Sons Window & Door recently replaced the roof, siding, windows, and doors on this Belmont, MA home, and what a transformation it was! The home’s new exterior looks stunning, and our homeowners were thrilled with the work we completed on their home. If you would like to learn more about the materials we used, keep reading below for more information!

CertainTeed Roofing

First, our team replaced the roof on the home. Our homeowners wanted to install a roofing material that would not only look great, but also last for decades. After a bit of discussion, we decided on installing CertainTeed Asphalt Roofing Shingles in Charcoal Black on their home. CertainTeed roofing is a fantastic option, renowned for both it’s beauty & durability, making it the perfect option for our homeowners! After we had installed the new roof, it was time for the next step of the project!

CertainTeed Siding

Next, our team worked on installing siding for our homeowners. CertainTeed’s Monogram siding is a fantastic option for homeowners in search of a sleek, durable and economical siding option for their home’s exterior. The homeowners were looking for a siding option that would compliment their home’s exterior and match their roofing. They decided on installing charcoal gray siding on the home, which looks fantastic and will keep their home protected for years to come!

Harvey Building Products Tribute Windows

After the siding, the next step was to install the new windows! The homeowners decided on installing a few windows from Waltham, MA’s own Harvey Building Products. Harvey’s Tribute Double-Hung windows are not only easy to operate, they look fantastic and will instantly boost your home’s curb appeal. For this home, the homeowners decided to install windows that had a black exterior, which in combination with the gray siding and white trim, made the exterior of the home pop. We love the contrast that the different colors created, and the homeowners were very satisfied with the finished product! However, even after we installed the windows, there was one more step to complete!

Therma-Tru Doors & Andersen Full-View Storm Door

The last step for this Belmont remodel was replacing our homeowners front doors. For the interior door, the homeowners decided on a dark gray Therma-Tru entry door to help match the aesthetic they had created on the exterior of the home. For added energy efficiency, and security, they elected to install a full-view Andersen Storm Door. Not only can you see the beautiful Therma-Tru Entry Door through the storm door, but the home is extremely energy efficient! The best of both worlds!

How To Spot A Roofing Scam

Your roof is the most important piece of your home’s exterior. It provides a number of benefits, including keeping your home protected from the elements and pests, boosting your home’s curb appeal and resale value, and providing your home with additional layers of insulation. With so much to gain from having a properly maintained roof, homeowners and contractors alike know how important it is to keep your roof protected. Some contractors will try to take advantage of this fact by praying on homeowners who are not well versed in exterior remodeling, and convince them that their home is in need of repairs when it is not. If you’re interested in learning more about roofing scams and how to avoid them, keep reading below:

Storm Chasers

When it comes to roofing scams, there is one that we see far more than any other: storm chasers. This scam is built around leveraging homeowners fear after a significant storm comes through the area. With the storm chaser scam, a contractor will come knocking on your door after a major storm telling you that your roof was damaged and it needs to be repaired. Most contractors won’t come knocking on your door offering their services, particularly after a major storm when they are being bombarded with calls for work. A storm chaser will convince you to allow them to complete the work, and then as soon as the work is completed they leave town, and you have a poorly installed roof that will fail within a few years with no way to contact the contractor.

Door-To-Door Salesman

This scam is similar to the storm chaser, praying on homeowners fears, but slightly different. The door-to-door salesman will show up at your front step telling you that your roof looks like it needs to be repaired, and ask to get up on your roof in order to assess the damage. Oftentimes once they are up on your roof they will cause damage that needs to be repaired when your roof was in fine condition. While it is not unheard of for contractors to make door-to-door pitches, it is usually a warning sign. If a contractor knocks at your door asking to get on your roof, ask to see their licensing and insurance and to schedule an appointment for another day. If they are serious about the work they will be willing to provide this information and reschedule.

Low Cost Of Installation

Another common roofing scam that homeowners see the low-ball offer. This contractor will give you a quote that is far lower than any of the competitors, but that number will continue to rise as the project is being completed due to “unforeseen” costs. If you find that your contractor is giving you a number that appears too good to be true, it very likely is!

After CertainTeed Siding and Shingles

CertainTeed Roofing and Siding

Our team at Three Sons recently completed an asphalt shingle and vinyl siding renovation in West Roxbury. The homeowners reached out to us looking to replace their home’s shingle roof and siding. They wanted to update their home’s exterior to boost its curb appeal and keep their home protected at the same time. We were happy to assist the homeowners with their siding and roofing replacement needs. We discussed all of the available options we had for our homeowners, and they ultimately decided upon installing CertainTeed shingles and vinyl siding on their home.

CertainTeed Monogram Vinyl Siding & Cedar Impressions

When discussing our available siding options with our homeowners they decided to install a combination of CertainTeed Monogram Vinyl Siding and Cedar Impressions. Both siding options are fantastic, and we were happy to be able to provide our homeowners with the perfect siding solutions for their homes.

CertainTeed’s Monogram Vinyl Siding is a durable, long-lasting, and highly-customizable option, which allowed our homeowners to find siding that fit the aesthetic vision they had for their home. They decided upon installing Charcoal Gray Monogram siding, which looks fantastic with the black shutters we installed on their home’s windows!

In addition to installing CertainTeed’s Monogram Vinyl Siding, our homeowners also decided to install sections of CertainTeed’s Cedar Impressions siding. Cedar Impressions shingles are designed to resemble real cedar shingles, which many homeowners appreciate the look of, but not the maintenance and upkeep that comes with wood siding. Cedar Impressions shingles are molded from real cedar shingles using polymer, making them extremely durable, while still providing the aesthetic appeal of cedar shingles. For homeowners who are interested in installing wood siding onto their exterior but don’t want to deal with the maintenance it requires, Cedar Impressions is the perfect siding solution.

CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles

Our team was also happy to able to replace our homeowner’s shingles with new CertainTeed shingles. Our homeowners were looking for a roofing system that could keep their home protected from everything that New England has to offer and CertainTeed offered the perfect solution! In addition to replacing the shingles on our homeowner’s roof, we also installed new shingles on top of their Bay window, putting the finishing touches on their home’s new exterior. Our homeowner’s new asphalt shingles look fantastic with their Charcoal Gray siding and our team was happy to be able to provide them with a roofing system that would keep their home protected year round!

Three Sons Roof House Spring

Spring Roof Maintenance

Winter has officially come to an end in New England.  The grass is growing, the birds are chirping, and all that pesky snow is gone! Many homeowners are excited to see that the winter season has come to an end, but now that winter is over, it’s time for homeowners to examine their home’s exteriors for any damage.  One of the most important areas that needs to be assessed by homeowners each spring is their roof.  Your home’s roof is one of the single most important pieces of your home’s exterior, acting as an umbrella protecting your home! Therefore it is essential to make sure it is kept in good repair, making a spring check-up a necessity for homeowners.  Here are the signs you should be looking for that your roof is in need of repairs or replacement.

Missing/Damaged Shingles

The first and most obvious sign that your roof will need to be replaced is that you have damaged, broken, or missing shingles. There is a variety of signs of damage on your shingles, from curling at the edges, to cracked or broken shingles, to warping, to missing granules. If you notice any of these signs, consider having a roofing professional examine your roof to inspect its integrity and assess whether it needs to be replaced!

Moss/Leaves and Pine Needles

While these two issues have different causes, they create the same issue, holding moisture on your roof.  A few leaves and pine needles are nothing to worry about, but when you have a thick layer of brush on your roof, it will hold a considerable amount of moisture on your shingles and cause water damage.  Moss, on the other hand, forms when your roof has standing moisture on it caused by shady conditions.  If you have either moss or leaves sitting on your roof, you will need to have them removed in order to limit the moisture on your roof and stop the damage from occurring!

Gutter Damage

Another piece of your home’s roof that you may want to examine is your gutters. During the winter, water can freeze inside your gutters and expand, damaging the seals in your gutter system that help keep water off of your home’s exterior and away from the foundation of your home. If you notice any cracks or bends in your gutter system that could prevent the system from working properly, consider having a professional look at it and repair any damage to the system.

Signs That Your Roof Needs To Be Replaced

Roofs, just like any other portion of your home’s exterior, eventually need to be replaced.  They are constantly exposed to, and pummeled by, the elements, functioning as your home’s largest barrier against them. This leads to wear and tear that will eventually degrade your roof’s ability to safely protect your home. However, sometimes it can be hard to tell when your roof is nearing the end of it’s lifespan.  If you’ve been curious about whether or not your roof needs to be replaced, take a look at our blog to learn about a few of the most common signs.

Your Shingles Are In Bad Shape

There are plenty of reasons your shingles may need to be replaced.  They could be losing granules, which help protect the shingles asphalt coating from UV rays, provide fire resistance, and also add aesthetic appeal. Your shingles could also be curling, cupping, or buckling from water or wind damage, which obviously degrades their performance.

Your Roof Is Visibly Sagging In

A clear sign that you need to replace your roof is the moment you see any visible sagging.  If you see that your home has a sagging roof, you’ll want to replace it immediately to protect your family and your home.  A sagging roof indicates that there is a significant amount of rot damage that’s affecting your home’s ability to hold up the weight of your roof, which could cause it to collapse and cause a great deal of damage.  If you notice that your roof is sagging at all, have it examined and replaced immediately!

There Is Water or Visible Light In Your Attic

If you have any water, or visible light, coming into your attic, you will need to replace your roof.  Light is a relatively minor concern when compared to water. If there is light finding its way into your attic, it means there are small holes that could also allow in moisture and contribute to energy loss.  However, if you find water in your attic, that can quickly become a major issue.  It will effect your home’s frame, leading to rot damage and causing significant damage to your home’s roof deck and potentially the frame of your home.

Moss Growth

Another sign that your roof may need to be replaced is moss growth.  Whether your roof needs to be replaced really depends on how significant the mass has become.  Moss tends to grow in climates with more precipitation, and particularly on roofs that don’t get a lot of light which helps to evaporate moisture.  If moss growth becomes significant, it can find its way into the nooks and crannies of your shingles where it can cause significant damage, as it traps moisture on your roof which becomes particularly damaging during the winter.

It’s Old

Finally, you may simply need to replace your roof because it’s outdated. If your roof has been on your home for more than two or three decades, it’s likely that it’s not doing a great job at protecting your home from moisture damage, or keeping your home very energy efficient.
