Different Styles of Windows

When it comes to replacement windows, there isn’t a one size fits all solution.  Different homeowners have different needs, whether its functionality, aesthetics, or cost. Luckily, there are an enormous variety of window styles to choose from, ensuring that every homeowner can find windows that fit their needs! Keep reading below to learn about a few of the most popular window styles and when and where you should install them!

Double-Hung

Perhaps the most common window style installed by homeowners, double-hung windows operate vertically in their tracks, making them easy to use.  Modern double-hung windows also allow homeowners to tilt the windows outward in order to reach the outer glass of their second story windows without using a ladder, which makes cleaning far easier. This also promotes superior ventilation, and they are a very popular window style for these reasons.

Casement

Another popular style for its ease of use, casement windows operate via a crank that opens them horizontally outwards.  While they are not as easy to clean as a double-hung window, if you are going to have children frequently operating the windows in a particular room, casement windows are a safe, and easy to use option!

Picture

While this option is best suited to rooms that don’t need additional means of ventilation, picture windows are a wonderful way to flood your room with natural light! Large and stationary, picture windows don’t offer the same degree of functionality as some other styles, but they are certainly a statement piece, and they look fantastic when straddled by casement or double hung windows on either side to provide ventilation.

Awning

Like casement windows, awning windows are easily operated via a crank, making them a great option for the kids.  The only difference between a casement and awning window is that while a casement window opens “outwards”, an awning window opens “upwards”.

Sliding

If ease of operation is your primary concern, sliding windows are the option for you.  They are most useful when installed in hard to reach places, such as over the kitchen sink where you might need a bit of fresh air while you’re standing over a sink full of dishes.

Bay/Bow Windows

Finally, we’ve arrived at two of the most beautiful window styles on the market, bay and bow windows. The two styles are nearly identical, with a bay window generally comprised of three windows, while a bow has four or five.  However, both share the same general design, which entails a curved structure that extends outward from the side of the home, with a stationary window in the center of the piece, surrounded by smaller double-hung windows that add a degree of functionality.  Bay and Bow windows are statement pieces that will function as the centerpiece of nearly any room they are installed in.  They are fantastic as a reading nook, sunbathing spot, or even just for the beauty they provide.

Signs Your Windows Need To Be Replaced

Your windows are an important piece when it comes to the health of your home. They provide your home with sunlight, ventilation, and curb appeal, and play an important role when it comes to keeping your home in good condition. However, it can often be difficult to identify whether your windows are in need of replacement.

Drafts Around The Frames

A clear sign that your windows need to be replaced is when you begin to feel drafts around your windows.  If you feel the cold creeping in around your windows during the winter, or the heat during the summer, take you’ll want to replace your home’s windows.

Difficulty Operating The Windows

If you are having trouble operating your windows, you’ll want to consider replacing them. When your windows begin to stick in their frames, it’s time to consider replacing them.  Your windows should be easy to operate in order to avoid injury, and after years of being exposed to the elements, your windows may begin to stick in their tracks.

It’s Hard To Clean Your Windows

While old windows are often difficult to clean.  Old double-hung windows have to be cleaned from the outside on a ladder, which makes it a difficult, slightly dangerous task to have to do on an annual or bi-annual basis. If you’re tired of having to climb up on a ladder every time you need to clean your windows, consider installing new double-hung windows.  Modern double-hung windows are generally designed to swing inward to make cleaning second or third story windows much easier.

Noise Pollution

If you feel like you can hear every car’s engine within a half-mile radius through your closed windows, you’re probably not imagining it! Old windows, particularly ones that are drafty, tend to also leak sound through the small openings that drafts come through.  If you feel like you can hear the whole neighborhood at night, your windows may be to blame.

They Look Worn Out

This sign is particularly relevant if you plan on putting your home on the market in the near future.  Old, chipped windows often take away from a home’s curb appeal, and can significantly take away from their

Energy Efficient Windows

The Positive Impact of Energy Efficient Windows

Almost every homeowner has a list of home improvements that seems to never end. More likely than not, replacing the home’s windows is included. Although, maybe not as high on the list as it should be. The reason for this is because replacing a home’s windows is not always something that is believed to be extremely beneficial or even something that will have any sort of lasting impact at all. But this cannot be any further from the truth. What many individuals do not know is that the benefits provided by properly installed energy efficient windows can help with both issues of appearance and finance. Many homeowners overlook the incredibly positive impact that energy efficient windows will have on the well being of not only their home but those in it as well.

Energy Cost & Savings:

Whether it is a summer, winter, spring, or fall, energy efficient windows provide savings year-round. Throughout warmer seasons when cooling is required, installing energy efficient windows will significantly reduce solar heat gain. In addition to this, they provide homeowners with clean and clear views of the nice weather outside. During the colder seasons, many problems can arise from non-energy efficient windows such as heat loss and air leaks. These then lead to issues including discomfort and condensation, which also decreases visibility.

Increased Visibility:

The amount of daylight and view provided by a window are two of its most important factors. Outdated windows that are not energy efficient are prone to condensation. Many homeowners do not think twice when they see condensation on the windows although it is indicative of windows that need upgrading. By improving your home’s windows to energy efficient windows, you can decrease the condensation buildup and optimize the home for daylight and visibility.

Decreased Fading:

Carpet, fabrics, paper, artwork, paints, and wood are organic materials that may fade upon exposure to sunlight. The type and intensity of transmitted radiation can be influenced by window selection. UV rays contained within sunlight are the most harmful due to their high levels of energy and ability to break chemical bonds. This breaking is what leads to fading and degradation within organic materials.

Home Transformation in Roslindale, MA

One of the projects that we just recently worked on was an amazing home transformation in Roslindale. We used multiple different products in order to finish the project and highlight certain aspects of the home, including its gorgeously unique shape. With the help of CertainTeed products, Harvey Building Products, and Therma-Tru Doors, we were able to take this home to an all new level. When we first went to take a look at the job, for the initial consultation, we realized how perfect this home could be with a little bit of a change to the exterior aesthetic of this Roslindale, MA home. About the Project

This project was completed by utilizing a few different products that we carry for specific projects. The first was the siding, which was CertainTeed in Charcoal. This being said, we also utilized Harvey Building products for the beautiful windows that we installed, as well as Therma-Tru Doors, which added a delicate pop to the front of the home

CertainTeed Siding

CertainTeed Monogram siding is a siding that we use extremely often. The quality is so high, that it is one of the main products that we use. This being said, we also made sure to go with a charcoal that really acted well against the white on the bordering.

Harvey Building Products

Harvey Building Products are great when it comes to windows, as they have been a leader in the field for many years.

Therma-Tru Doors

These doors, which we also use quite a bit, really make the home pop, as mentioned above. This blue perfectly complemented the charcoal color of the siding.
