Single vs. Double Hung Windows: Which One Is Right for Your Home?

If you’re in the market for new windows for your home, you may be wondering whether single or double-hung windows are the better option. Both types of windows have their pros and cons, so it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at single and double-hung windows and discuss the main differences between them. We’ll also help you figure out which window is best for your specific needs!

Importance of Choosing the Right Windows for Your Home

Windows are an essential part of any home, and they play a vital role in both the function and the aesthetic of your property. Not only do windows let in natural light and fresh air, but they also play a role in your home’s insulation and energy efficiency. When it comes to choosing new windows, it’s important to select ones that will be durable and long-lasting, as well as energy-efficient and stylish.

What Are Single-Hung Windows?

Single-hung windows are a type of window that has one movable sash and one stationary sash. The bottom sash is the only one that opens and closes, while the top sash remains fixed in place. Single-hung windows are very common in older homes, but they can also be found in newly built homes as well.

What Are Double-Hung Windows?

Double-hung windows are similar to single-hung windows, but they have two movable sashes instead of just one. This means that both the top and bottom sashes can be opened and closed, which allows for more ventilation. Double-hung windows are more popular in newer homes, but they can also be found in older homes as well.

Main Differences Between Single-Hung and Double-Hung Windows

Number of Movable Sashes

The most obvious difference between single-hung and double-hung windows is that single-hung windows only have one movable sash, while double-hung windows have two. However, there are a few other key differences to keep in mind as well.

Window Size

Single-hung windows are typically smaller than double-hung windows, which means they may be a better option if you’re working with limited space.

Energy Efficiency

Double-hung windows are typically more energy-efficient than single-hung windows because they have two layers of glass, while single-hung windows only have one.

Ventilation

Double-hung windows are also better for ventilation than single-hung windows because they allow you to open both the top and bottom sashes. This allows air to circulate more freely, which can help prevent stuffiness in your home.

Cost

Single-hung windows are typically more affordable than double-hung windows, so they may be a better option if you’re working with a tight budget.

How to Choose the Right Window for Your Home

Now that you know more about single-hung and double-hung windows, you may be wondering which one is right for your home. The answer to this question depends on a few different factors, including your budget, your needs, and your personal preferences.

If you’re looking for an affordable option, single-hung windows are typically the way to go. However, if you’re looking for energy-efficiency and good ventilation, double-hung windows may be a better choice. Ultimately, the best way to choose the right window for your home is to consult with a professional who can help you weigh your options and make the best decision for your specific needs.

Tips for Getting Your Deck or Patio Ready for Spring

The snow is melting, the birds are singing, and the flowers are starting to bloom. It can only mean one thing: spring is finally here! And that means it’s time to start thinking about getting your deck ready for all of the outdoor entertaining you’ll be doing this season. In this blog, you will find a list of tips for you to follow so that your deck is in perfect condition all season long!

Power Wash Your Deck for Deep-Cleaning

One of the first things you’ll want to do is give your deck a good cleaning. You can do this by power washing it or by scrubbing it down with soapy water and a stiff brush. Be sure to pay special attention to any areas that seem to be collecting dirt or debris.

Inspect the Deck for Damage

After you’ve cleaned and swept the deck, it’s time to inspect it for any damage. This includes things like cracks in the wood, loose nails, and splinters. If you find any damage, be sure to make any repairs right away to prevent further, more permanent damage.

Sand Down Your Deck to Prepare for Staining

If you plan on staining your deck this spring, now is the time to do it! Start by sanding down the entire surface of the deck to rough it up a bit. This will help the stain to adhere better and last longer.

Stain or Seal Your Deck

Once you’ve sanded down your deck, it’s time to either stain or seal it. If you choose to stain your deck, be sure to select a color that will complement your home’s exterior and furniture. And if you decide to seal your deck, be sure to do so with a high-quality sealer that will protect the wood from the elements. Be sure to wait 24 hours before applying the first and second coat to allow the sealer to dry completely.

Clean Your Outdoor Furniture and Accessories

After you’ve taken care of your deck, it’s time to turn your attention to your outdoor furniture and accessories. Start by giving them a good cleaning with soapy water and a soft brush. If they’re looking a little worse for wear, consider sanding them down and applying a fresh coat of paint or stain.

Damaged siding on house

Signs Your Siding Needs to be Replaced

The siding on your home is one of the most important factors when it comes to both the interior comfort and the exterior functionality of the house. It’s easy to overlook regular siding maintenance and repairs since it’s on the outside of your home, but you can’t ignore it forever! Be on the lookout for these telltale signs that your siding needs to be replaced before exterior neglect turns into interior damage.

Damaged Siding

You should regularly inspect your siding for signs of damage. Damaged siding can come in many forms, including holes, cracks, gaps, and warped siding. Some damages can be repaired, but if your siding is frequently showing signs of damage, it’s probably due to be replaced. Inspect your siding at least twice a year and after any storm or high winds.

High Heating and Cooling Costs

Siding helps protect the interior of your home from the exterior weather conditions. If your heating and cooling bills seem unreasonably high, your siding may be to blame. Check for drafts around your outlets and light switches. Even if you can’t find any noticeable drafts, that doesn’t mean your siding is energy efficient. Truly energy-efficient siding should have an Energy Star approval and be paired with plenty of exterior wall insulation.

Moisture Inside the Home

Excess moisture inside of your home can come in many forms. Mold, mildew, and even rot are all signs that moisture is entering your home. If you can’t narrow down an interior cause of the excess moisture, your outdated siding could be to blame. Siding with gaps, cracks, or holes is especially prone to letting moisture enter the home through exterior walls. It’s better to replace old or damaged siding before it turns into a moisture issue inside the house. Removing mold and repairing the interior of your home will be a lot more expensive and a bigger inconvenience than just replacing your outdated siding before it becomes an issue.

Unsightly Appearance

Sometimes the most significant telltale sign that your siding needs to be replaced is your own unhappiness with how it looks. If your home is sticking out like a sore thumb around your neighbors, upgrading your siding is the perfect fix! New siding can be purchased in a variety of colors and textures to fit any design plan. New siding that improves the appearance of your home is not only something you and your neighbors will appreciate; it’s attractive to potential buyers too. Siding has a great return on investment because it raises the resale value of your home.

bathroom remodeling project

Benefits of Remodeling Your Bathroom

Your bathroom is one of the most important rooms in your home. It serves a number of
important functions, providing you & your family with a space in which to get ready for, and
unwind after, a long day. Furthermore, it also helps add value & beauty to your home, making
your home more desirable to potential home buyers should you ever choose to sell your home.
Considering how important your home’s bathroom is, it should come as no surprise that
remodeling the space can provide major benefits for your home & the functionality of the space.
If you’re interested in learning a bit about the benefits of remodeling your home’s bathroom,
keep reading below for more information!

Increase Your Home’s Value

One of the first benefits that likely comes to mind for homeowners is the increase in value that a
bathroom remodel provides. In fact, a bathroom remodel tends to rank at the very top of
ROI home improvement lists. A bathroom remodel can return as much as 102% of its value,
meaning that remodeling your bathroom can fully pay for itself when you decide to sell your
home! Even a remodel as simple as replacing a couple of fixtures, such as the vanity or
shower/tub and repainting the space can add significant value to your home! If your end goal
of remodeling your home is to improve its value, a bathroom remodel should be high on your
list!

Create Serenity

Another reason homeowners often choose to remodel their homes is that they are interested in
adding a bit of tranquility to their mornings & evenings. Your home’s bathroom is an essential
part of your home’s interior, helping to ground you at the beginning, and end, of your days.
Therefore, it is important to build a space in which you can be comfortable & at peace. Many
homeowners choose to remodel their bathrooms in order to make the space more peaceful. You
could consider painting the space a neutral color, such as gray or beige, or perhaps you could
replace your fixtures with a more monochromatic color scheme. No matter what you decide,
remodeling your bathroom can help make the space feel more serene!

Save Money & Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

In addition to making the space more peaceful or valuable, there are other benefits to remodeling
your bathroom. Installing new fixtures can help make your home more energy efficient by using
energy-efficient toilets or sinks. Furthermore, you can also make your home more eco-friendly
by deciding to use renewable resources for your bathroom remodel, and recycling your old
fixtures rather than throwing them away.

Remodeled basement with new windows, shelves, walls, and a fireplace in the middle of the room

Basement Remodel with New Windows & Door

Our team at Three Sons was recently contacted to help with a homeowner’s basement remodel. They wanted to replace their home’s basement and transform the space from an outdated afterthought into a room where they could come relax and enjoy a warm fire in the winter months. Our team got right to work on renovating the space into a beautiful new recreation space. If you’d like to learn more about this basements transformation, keep reading below to learn more:

The Remodeling Process

The first thing our team did upon beginning the basement remodel was discuss their wants and needs for the new space. They wanted to completely reimagine the space by installing new doors and windows, as well as replacing the walls and shelving in the space. After we learned what they were looking for from the remodel, we began to tear down the old paneling and remove the old windows and doors to begin the remodeling process.

After we had removed the old windows, door, and paneling from the room, we began by installing plaster & board walling in the room. While we were installing the new walls in the room, we also created built-in shelves flanking the fireplace for pictures, books, or anything else the homeowners want to add. After that was complete, our team began to tackle the window replacement, using new Harvey Classic windows to fill the same space that the old windows occupied. After the window installation was completed, we needed to replace the old door to the room, and then the remodel was complete!

The transformed basement looks fantastic, and the homeowners were thrilled with their new recreation space. From enjoying a warm fire during the winter, to having a quiet place to come read and relax after a long day, this room is sure to get plenty of us after this remodel! If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the materials we used for this remodel, take a look below to learn more!
