Fiber Cement Siding: The Pros and Cons

If you are in the market for a new type of siding, fiber cement may be the right choice for you. It is made from a combination of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers, which gives it a natural wood look. It is also very durable and can withstand extreme weather conditions. In this blog post, we will discuss the pros and cons of fiber cement siding so that homeowners can make an informed decision about whether or not it is the right option for them.

What Is Fiber Cement Siding?

Siding is an important feature of your home for its curb appeal and protection against the elements. There are many different types of siding on the market, but fiber cement is a great option for those looking for durability and affordability. Fiber cement siding is made from a mixture of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. It is then formed into boards or shingles that can be installed onto the exterior of your home.

Pros of Fiber Cement Siding

High Durability

One of the biggest advantages of fiber cement siding is that it is extremely durable. It can withstand high winds, hail, and even fire. This makes it a great choice for homeowners in areas that are prone to severe weather conditions. It is also insect and rot resistant, which means that it will not be damaged by termites or other pests.

Affordable Siding Option

Many homeowners chase the look of wood siding without realizing how expensive it can be. Fiber cement is a more affordable alternative that still gives your home the same curb appeal.

Low Maintenance

Another advantage of fiber cement siding is that it requires very little maintenance. It does not need to be painted or stained like wood siding, and it will not warp or rot over time.

Cons of Fiber Cement Siding

Heavy and Difficult to Install

Fiber cement siding is much heavier than other types of siding, such as vinyl. This can make it difficult to install, especially if you are doing it yourself. It is important to have professional help when installing fiber cement siding to ensure that it is done correctly.

Prone to Cracking

Although fiber cement is a durable siding material, it is still susceptible to cracking. This can be caused by severe weather conditions or even everyday wear and tear. It is important to inspect your siding regularly for any cracks or damage so that you can repair them as soon as possible.

Must Be Painted or Stained

Although fiber cement siding does not need to be painted as often as wood siding, it will still need to be painted or stained every few years. This is because the color can fade over time and the siding may start to look dull.

Damaged siding on house

Signs Your Siding Needs to be Replaced

The siding on your home is one of the most important factors when it comes to both the interior comfort and the exterior functionality of the house. It’s easy to overlook regular siding maintenance and repairs since it’s on the outside of your home, but you can’t ignore it forever! Be on the lookout for these telltale signs that your siding needs to be replaced before exterior neglect turns into interior damage.

Damaged Siding

You should regularly inspect your siding for signs of damage. Damaged siding can come in many forms, including holes, cracks, gaps, and warped siding. Some damages can be repaired, but if your siding is frequently showing signs of damage, it’s probably due to be replaced. Inspect your siding at least twice a year and after any storm or high winds.

High Heating and Cooling Costs

Siding helps protect the interior of your home from the exterior weather conditions. If your heating and cooling bills seem unreasonably high, your siding may be to blame. Check for drafts around your outlets and light switches. Even if you can’t find any noticeable drafts, that doesn’t mean your siding is energy efficient. Truly energy-efficient siding should have an Energy Star approval and be paired with plenty of exterior wall insulation.

Moisture Inside the Home

Excess moisture inside of your home can come in many forms. Mold, mildew, and even rot are all signs that moisture is entering your home. If you can’t narrow down an interior cause of the excess moisture, your outdated siding could be to blame. Siding with gaps, cracks, or holes is especially prone to letting moisture enter the home through exterior walls. It’s better to replace old or damaged siding before it turns into a moisture issue inside the house. Removing mold and repairing the interior of your home will be a lot more expensive and a bigger inconvenience than just replacing your outdated siding before it becomes an issue.

Unsightly Appearance

Sometimes the most significant telltale sign that your siding needs to be replaced is your own unhappiness with how it looks. If your home is sticking out like a sore thumb around your neighbors, upgrading your siding is the perfect fix! New siding can be purchased in a variety of colors and textures to fit any design plan. New siding that improves the appearance of your home is not only something you and your neighbors will appreciate; it’s attractive to potential buyers too. Siding has a great return on investment because it raises the resale value of your home.

We met with these homeowners to discuss their replacement project, and informed them about all of our available options. After discussing all of our team’s options, the homeowners decided on a unique design for their exterior. They wanted to use CertainTeed’s Cedar Impressions shingles on the front of the home, above their existing brick siding, and then use Monogram vinyl siding around the sides and perimeter of the home!

This design looks fantastic, and the homeowners were thrilled with the finished product! We’re happy we could help them complete their vision, and the home’s exterior looks beautiful! If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the materials our team used on this job, keep reading below for more information!

CertainTeed Monogram Siding

To begin, let’s discuss the beautiful Monogram siding we installed around the sides and back of the home. Monogram siding is CertainTeed’s most popular offering, beloved by homeowners and contractors for its durability and curb appeal! It is available in an enormous array of color options, and with its beautiful cedar-imitation finish, it is sure to help your home stand-out in the neighborhood!

For their siding replacement, these homeowners chose a beautiful shade called Natural Clay, which looks fantastic on the home, complementing the white trim on their windows. We removed the old siding and made quick work of the install, giving the home a beautiful face-lift!

However, there was one more side of the home that needed attending to; the front! Which brings us to the next material we used for the replacement!

CertainTeed Cedar Impressions

For the front of the home, the homeowners wanted to install a material with just a bit of extra curb appeal, to complement their brick siding on the first story! Rather than using Monogram siding, the homeowners decided to use beautiful Cedar Impressions siding shingles in the same shade of Natural Clay! This made the siding look cohesive with the rest of the home, but provided that extra bit of beauty to the front of the home. Combined with the brick along the base of the home, these Cedar Impressions shingles look beautiful, and truly capped of this remodel!
