Stopping Drafts: How to Keep Your Home Warm and Save Money

It’s the time of year when homeowners are turning on their furnaces for the first time and cranking up the heat. While many people enjoy the warmth and comfort that comes from their homes in the colder months, few people enjoy paying their high utility bills. One of the main reasons why people’s energy bills are so high is because of drafts coming into their homes through windows. In this blog post, we will teach you how to stop drafts from happening in your home and save money on your heating bill!

Why Do Drafts Happen?

Drafts happen when there is an opening in your window that allows outside air to come inside. This often happens because of poorly sealed windows or cracks in the window frame. When the outside air comes into your home, it causes your furnace to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature, which raises your energy bill.

Replacing Windows Can Stop Drafts in Your Home

One of the best ways to stop drafts from coming into your home is to replace your windows. If you have old, single-pane windows, they are more likely to have cracks and gaps that allow drafts in. By upgrading to new, double- or triple-paned windows, you can significantly reduce the amount of air that comes into your home. Not only will this keep your home more comfortable, but it will also save you money on your energy bills.

Installing Different Window Frames Can Also Help

Another way to reduce drafts in your home is to install different window frames. If you have metal or wood window frames, they can expand and contract with the temperature changes, which can create gaps and cracks. By installing plastic or vinyl window frames, you can help reduce drafts in your home.

Upgrading the Siding on Your Home Can Stop Drafts

In addition to replacing your windows and installing different window frames, upgrading the siding on your home can also help stop drafts. If you have old, drafty siding, it can let air into your home and cause your furnace to work overtime. By upgrading to new, energy-efficient siding, you can help reduce outside air from coming inside and keep your home more comfortable.

Tools That Can Help Block Drafts

There are also a number of tools that you can use to block wind from coming into your home. These include window film, window insulation kits, and draft stoppers. These tools can help you seal up any gaps or cracks in your windows and keep the outside air from coming into your home.

Old Doors & Rusty Hinges Can Allow Air In

One of the most common places for drafting to happen is around doors. If your doors are old, they may not fit as snugly as they used to and can allow air to come in. In addition, if your hinges are rusty, they may not seal properly and can also let air into your home. By replacing old doors and repairing rusty hinges, you can help reduce drafts in your home.

Advantages of Replacing Your Windows

One popular home improvement project is replacing old windows. New windows come with obvious benefits to homes including enhancing the appearance of the home. However, new windows hold a lot more benefits than just that! Take a look at some of the main advantages to replacing old windows:

Curb Appeal

Getting new windows can really improve the overall appearance of your home, both inside and out. Windows can dramatically transform a home from looking rundown into looking fresh and high-end. There are also so many different styles, sizes, and colors of windows to choose from today, enabling homeowners to pick the right windows to match their home perfectly. On the inside of a home, new windows provide more natural light within a home making it much brighter, which can enhance the ambiance.

Increase Value of Home

As with any home improvement project, replacing windows can positively impact the value of a home. If you are looking to sell your home in the near future, it is very important to make sure your windows are new and up to date. Many prospective buyers may disregard homes that have damaged windows that need to be replaced. Windows not only make a home look nice and new, but they are essential for insulation and protection from outdoor elements that can further damage your home.

Energy Efficient

Like discussed above, windows can be used as insulation. When windows become old or damaged, it can create cracks and drafts, causing the outside air to come in and your inside temperature-controlled air to escape. In the summertime, this can cause homeowners to turn up their air conditioning to combat the hot air seeping, and in the winter, they will blast the heat. This just causes homeowners’ heating and cooling bills to skyrocket. Replacing old windows with new high-quality windows can really improve temperatures within a home while dramatically decreasing the amount of money spent on energy bills.

Noise Reduction

Being woken up by neighbors mowing their lawn, barking dogs, or traffic can be very irritating. However, there is an easy solution, and that is to replace your old windows. If you are often bothered by noise pollution, it may be best for you to invest in triple pane glass, which will block out the majority of unwanted noises.

CertainTeed Monogram Vinyl Siding & Cedar Impressions

To begin, let’s discuss the siding materials we used for this replacement. The home’s existing siding was a pale, yellow vinyl siding which looked nice, but the homeowners were ready for something fresh. They decided that for their siding replacement, they would install a mixture of Cedar Impressions siding shingles, along with CertainTeed’s most popular siding option, Monogram vinyl siding. They had the idea of using both siding materials to craft a unique two-tone siding approach that truly helped this home’s exterior pop.

We installed Mountain Cedar Impressions siding shingles on the top half of the home, with the Monogram siding in Cypress installed along the lower half of the home! Both options, built by CertainTeed, have plenty of curb appeal and offer impeccable protection against all of Massachusetts’ inclement weather.

The homeowners were thrilled with the finished siding, but we still had more work to do on this home!

Spring Home Maintenance Tips

Spring is in full bloom in Massachusetts. The leaves & flowers are coming out, the birds are
chirping, and the sun is sticking around longer every day! While New England is beautiful in the
springtime, it is also an important time for homeowners to take a look around their home’s
exterior. Massachusetts winters bring harsh weather conditions, including high winds, and bitter
frosts, which can deteriorate even the strongest homes over time. This makes it essential to
examine your home’s exterior each spring in order to assess the property for damage and make
any necessary repairs & replacements! If you’re interested in learning more about the home
maintenance you should be doing, keep reading below for more information!

Check Your Gutters

One of the most important bits of spring maintenance that you can do for your home is cleaning
your gutter system. For many homeowners, gutters are simply an afterthought, when in fact they
are a very important part of your home’s protection. Serving to safely route water away from
your home, having a clogged gutter system can cause considerable damage, as water pours
over the sides of the system, causing moisture damage to edge of your roof deck & starter
shingles, your fascia & soffit boards, and even your home’s foundation.

Be sure to clean your gutters at least once a year in the spring in order to ensure the system is
working properly!

Examine Your Shingles

Another piece of your roofing system that should be examined is your shingles. Your home’s
roof is exposed to all sorts of weather conditions, which eventually cause the shingles to
deteriorate. When the weather thaws, you should check on your roof’s integrity to ensure your
home won’t develop any leaks. Have a roofing professional examine the shingles for any
damage, as well as the flashing around your chimney & vents to ensure the roof isn’t leaking.

Checks Windows & Doors

Finally, you should be sure to examine your home’s windows & doors to ensure that they
haven’t absorbed any moisture. Due to the snow that lies at your door’s threshold, and window
sills, they are both exposed to standing water, particularly during the last month or two of winter
as everything thaws out. This can cause rot damage around the frames of both units, making it
essential to examine them both come spring. You can use a blunt, but pointy, object, such as a
screwdriver, to poke around the sills & thresholds for any sections of rotted wood. If you find
any, be sure to replace them in order to protect your home from additional water damage.
