Different Styles of Windows

When it comes to replacement windows, there isn’t a one size fits all solution.  Different homeowners have different needs, whether its functionality, aesthetics, or cost. Luckily, there are an enormous variety of window styles to choose from, ensuring that every homeowner can find windows that fit their needs! Keep reading below to learn about a few of the most popular window styles and when and where you should install them!

Double-Hung

Perhaps the most common window style installed by homeowners, double-hung windows operate vertically in their tracks, making them easy to use.  Modern double-hung windows also allow homeowners to tilt the windows outward in order to reach the outer glass of their second story windows without using a ladder, which makes cleaning far easier. This also promotes superior ventilation, and they are a very popular window style for these reasons.

Casement

Another popular style for its ease of use, casement windows operate via a crank that opens them horizontally outwards.  While they are not as easy to clean as a double-hung window, if you are going to have children frequently operating the windows in a particular room, casement windows are a safe, and easy to use option!

Picture

While this option is best suited to rooms that don’t need additional means of ventilation, picture windows are a wonderful way to flood your room with natural light! Large and stationary, picture windows don’t offer the same degree of functionality as some other styles, but they are certainly a statement piece, and they look fantastic when straddled by casement or double hung windows on either side to provide ventilation.

Awning

Like casement windows, awning windows are easily operated via a crank, making them a great option for the kids.  The only difference between a casement and awning window is that while a casement window opens “outwards”, an awning window opens “upwards”.

Sliding

If ease of operation is your primary concern, sliding windows are the option for you.  They are most useful when installed in hard to reach places, such as over the kitchen sink where you might need a bit of fresh air while you’re standing over a sink full of dishes.

Bay/Bow Windows

Finally, we’ve arrived at two of the most beautiful window styles on the market, bay and bow windows. The two styles are nearly identical, with a bay window generally comprised of three windows, while a bow has four or five.  However, both share the same general design, which entails a curved structure that extends outward from the side of the home, with a stationary window in the center of the piece, surrounded by smaller double-hung windows that add a degree of functionality.  Bay and Bow windows are statement pieces that will function as the centerpiece of nearly any room they are installed in.  They are fantastic as a reading nook, sunbathing spot, or even just for the beauty they provide.
