Fiber Cement FAQ’s

Fiber Cement has become an increasingly popular siding material that many homeowners are choosing to install on their homes! However, because it has been gaining in popularity, there are still many homeowners who are not aware of what fiber cement siding is or the benefits that it offers! If you’ve been curious to learn more about what fiber cement is, take a look at our blog!

What Is Fiber Cement?

Fiber Cement siding is a durable, composite, siding material comprised of cement, sand, and cellulose fiber.  It is generally constructed to resemble actual wood siding, or any other material you can think of. The materials are bonded together through autoclaving, which is essentially a high-temperature steam treatment.

Do You Need To Paint Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber Cement siding is typically painted at the factory before shipping.  There is a wide variety of available colors to match any homeowners choice of color scheme. Fiber Cement siding holds the paint quite well, which creates a very consistent coat of color. When you need to re-paint, it’s a very straight-forward job.

How Long Does Fiber Cement Siding Last?

One of the biggest inconveniences of vinyl siding is that it has a short enough lifespan (typically 15-30 years) that you will often have to replace your home’s siding more than once. Fiber Cement siding boasts a longer lifespan than vinyl, with most manufacturer warranties lasting at least 50 years, while your siding could last even longer, meaning if you choose to install fiber cement siding on your home, you may never need to replace it again! If you’ve been searching for a siding material that will protect your home for decades with minimal maintenance required, fiber cement is a fantastic option!

What Maintenance Will I Need To Do?

One of the major advantages of fiber cement siding is that it is extremely durable.  Fiber Cement is resistant to an enormous variety of damaging factors including extreme weather & temperatures, pests, mold & fungus, UV rays, cracking, warping, and more! You will never find a puncture in your fiber cement siding like you may in your vinyl siding! Generally, the most maintenance you can expect to carry out on your fiber cement siding will be cleaning off dirt and pollen that periodically builds up along the grooves.  A pressure washer, or even hose, will generally provide you with the cleaning power that you need!

Three Sons Roof House Spring

Spring Roof Maintenance

Winter has officially come to an end in New England.  The grass is growing, the birds are chirping, and all that pesky snow is gone! Many homeowners are excited to see that the winter season has come to an end, but now that winter is over, it’s time for homeowners to examine their home’s exteriors for any damage.  One of the most important areas that needs to be assessed by homeowners each spring is their roof.  Your home’s roof is one of the single most important pieces of your home’s exterior, acting as an umbrella protecting your home! Therefore it is essential to make sure it is kept in good repair, making a spring check-up a necessity for homeowners.  Here are the signs you should be looking for that your roof is in need of repairs or replacement.

Missing/Damaged Shingles

The first and most obvious sign that your roof will need to be replaced is that you have damaged, broken, or missing shingles. There is a variety of signs of damage on your shingles, from curling at the edges, to cracked or broken shingles, to warping, to missing granules. If you notice any of these signs, consider having a roofing professional examine your roof to inspect its integrity and assess whether it needs to be replaced!

Moss/Leaves and Pine Needles

While these two issues have different causes, they create the same issue, holding moisture on your roof.  A few leaves and pine needles are nothing to worry about, but when you have a thick layer of brush on your roof, it will hold a considerable amount of moisture on your shingles and cause water damage.  Moss, on the other hand, forms when your roof has standing moisture on it caused by shady conditions.  If you have either moss or leaves sitting on your roof, you will need to have them removed in order to limit the moisture on your roof and stop the damage from occurring!

Gutter Damage

Another piece of your home’s roof that you may want to examine is your gutters. During the winter, water can freeze inside your gutters and expand, damaging the seals in your gutter system that help keep water off of your home’s exterior and away from the foundation of your home. If you notice any cracks or bends in your gutter system that could prevent the system from working properly, consider having a professional look at it and repair any damage to the system.

Triple Decker House

Spring Home Maintenance

Spring Home Maintenance

Spring has arrived in New England.  Now that the snow has melted and the days are getting warmer and longer, homeowners are beginning to take stock of their home’s exteriors and determine what needs to be replaced.  If you are interested in learning what you should be looking for on your home’s exterior, take a look at our guide to see what you should be looking to repair and maintain this spring.

Examine Your Roof

One of the first things you should check on your home’s exterior is your roof.  Your roof is your home’s most important line of defense against the elements, and it is important to ensure that it is kept in good repair, especially with the influx of spring and summer showers that it will be exposed to all season. Ensure that there are no curling, broken, or missing shingles. If you feel comfortable on a ladder, you can examine it yourself. Otherwise, be sure to call a roofing professional to safely assess your roofs integrity.

Clean Your Gutters

Keeping your gutters free of debris is important because of the damage that can be caused by having clogged gutters.  Your gutter system helps to divert water off of your roof and away from your home.  If your gutters are clogged and overflowing, this can cause damage to a number of areas on your home, including your siding, fascia boards, and if the water is pooling under your walls, your home’s foundation. In order to ensure that water can safely drain away from your home, be sure to clean your gutters out each spring.

Inspect Your Windows and Doors

Another problem area that you should be sure to examine in the spring is your windows and doors.  Any openings in your home’s exterior offer a chance for moisture, and pests to find their way into your home where they can cause damage.  Your windows are particularly susceptible to moisture damage. When checking your windows, keep your eyes out for any small openings around your frames, or drafts coming through the windows.  If you can see light or feel a draft coming through the frames, this is a sign that moisture is also able to find its way into your frames where it can cause significant rot damage to your windows and the frame of your home if left unattended.

You should also examine your doors for any moisture damage as well. You can find moisture in your threshold by poking the area with an object like a screwdriver or any other blunt object by gently poking at the area to feel for any give in the threshold. If you have water damage in your threshold, you will want to replace it, as it could damage your door, or the frame of your home below it.

There is much more to consider, from your faucets and sprinklers, to your landscaping, to your deck, but if you begin by examining these problem areas, you will be off to a good start! Furthermore, if you are interested in replacing your home’s windows, doors, roofing, or siding this spring, our team at Three Sons would be happy to help! We can reached over the phone at (781) 899-6353 or by filling out our online contact form! We look forward to hearing from you!

Three Sons Double-Hung Window

Different Styles of Windows

When it comes to replacement windows, there isn’t a one size fits all solution.  Different homeowners have different needs, whether its functionality, aesthetics, or cost. Luckily, there are an enormous variety of window styles to choose from, ensuring that every homeowner can find windows that fit their needs! Keep reading below to learn about a few of the most popular window styles and when and where you should install them!

Double-Hung

Perhaps the most common window style installed by homeowners, double-hung windows operate vertically in their tracks, making them easy to use.  Modern double-hung windows also allow homeowners to tilt the windows outward in order to reach the outer glass of their second story windows without using a ladder, which makes cleaning far easier. This also promotes superior ventilation, and they are a very popular window style for these reasons.

Casement

Another popular style for its ease of use, casement windows operate via a crank that opens them horizontally outwards.  While they are not as easy to clean as a double-hung window, if you are going to have children frequently operating the windows in a particular room, casement windows are a safe, and easy to use option!

Picture

While this option is best suited to rooms that don’t need additional means of ventilation, picture windows are a wonderful way to flood your room with natural light! Large and stationary, picture windows don’t offer the same degree of functionality as some other styles, but they are certainly a statement piece, and they look fantastic when straddled by casement or double hung windows on either side to provide ventilation.

Awning

Like casement windows, awning windows are easily operated via a crank, making them a great option for the kids.  The only difference between a casement and awning window is that while a casement window opens “outwards”, an awning window opens “upwards”.

Sliding

If ease of operation is your primary concern, sliding windows are the option for you.  They are most useful when installed in hard to reach places, such as over the kitchen sink where you might need a bit of fresh air while you’re standing over a sink full of dishes.

Bay/Bow Windows

Finally, we’ve arrived at two of the most beautiful window styles on the market, bay and bow windows. The two styles are nearly identical, with a bay window generally comprised of three windows, while a bow has four or five.  However, both share the same general design, which entails a curved structure that extends outward from the side of the home, with a stationary window in the center of the piece, surrounded by smaller double-hung windows that add a degree of functionality.  Bay and Bow windows are statement pieces that will function as the centerpiece of nearly any room they are installed in.  They are fantastic as a reading nook, sunbathing spot, or even just for the beauty they provide.
